Welcome to the Conversation

Welcome to a conversation about

Whatever Happened to the Church?
January 9 – February 6 at St. Benedict’s Church, Los Osos
Group discussions on Thursdays at 10 am – beginning January 9
On-line discussion on athornintheflesh.com – beginning January 1

The past thirty years have seen great changes in all the mainline American churches, not least the Episcopal Church. These discussions will examine those changes through the lens of the Rev. Caroline Hall’s recent book, A Thorn in the Flesh: How Gay Sexuality is Changing the Episcopal Church. We’ll be discussing some of the following questions:

  • How does the Episcopal Church’s recent history reflect a changing culture?
  • How and why do groups of people become ‘outsiders’? What can we do about it?
  • How should contemporary Christians interpret the Bible?
  • Does God’s love extend to everyone, and if so are there any moral absolutes?
  • Are Christians called be political activists, or live lives of quiet piety?
  • What does it mean to be ‘Anglican,’ and who gets to decide?
  • How can liberals who think that everyone has a right to be at the table deal with those who want to chop the table up and burn it?
I hope you’ll join us. You can register for these discussions by emailing donnaross@charter.net
